Out in front of the Hakurei shrine, while Reimu was off doing something and therefore not present, Yukari Yakumo had come out to play. The boundary youkai stood there with a stupid grin hidden behind the fan she held up to her face, parasol held in a relaxed grip.
She had hung a banner up from the gate in front of the shrine, reading "FIGHT YUKARI YAKUMO! BEAT HER, GET SWEET PRIZE! LOSE, GET SOMEWHAT LAME PRIZE ANYWAYS!"
And knowing the residents of Gensokyo and their propensity for getting into trouble, she knew it wouldn't be long before she could have some fun. She hadn't gotten to beat anyone up for the hell of it in a while.
[Who would like to challenge Yukari to test out the system? Don't worry, she'll be limiting herself to make it easy on you.]

Mizuiro approaches the Hakurei shrine, having heard of Reimu before. He wore a red headband along with his usual black clothing, and was not in a good mood; there were too many people around for his liking, he'd woke up with a headache, and to top it off he was out of water chestnuts.
And now this.
Some sort of fancily-dressed lady with an arrogant aura and an arrogant sign, no less. Powerful, certainly, but it was aggravating on a subconscious level. Mizuiro considered this, and decided that, although normally he wouldn't give in to such a base desire... He got a prize either way, so why not? Good chance to test out the new blade anyhow.
Based on her appearance it was almost certainly going to be danmaku. So be it... Mizuiro walks calmly up until he stands ten feet from Yukari. He takes a relaxed stance and places his left hand on the hilt of the sheathed blade, and speaks in a low, calm tone... If with a slight hint of sarcasm.
"Fight Yukari Yakumo, eh... Why not. You want to show me what you can do, fancy girl? Assuming your aim is danmaku, of course."

Mizuiro couldn't see this, but behind her fan, Yukari's silly, eager grin shifted to a predatory one. He would be able to see the dangerous twinkle in the youkai's eyes, though.
Yukari really had no idea who this guy was. If she'd ever seen him before, she had forgotten all about it. And judging by his words and his boldness, he had no idea who she was. Fine by her- he'd get to learn about her firsthand. She didn't really mind being called 'fancy girl', actually. Maybe she'd keep that.
"Yes, I haven't had a good danmaku battle in a while. You can declare how many spellcards and such you intend to use first, and I'll go easy on you and stick to a similar number," she said. She folded her fan and put it into a gap behind her back. No need to bother hiding her expression anymore, not with a challenge before her.

Well, she was confident. She sounded like she meant it when she said "going easy." Excellent. No one got stronger fighting weaker opponents, after all.
Let's see, spellcards. He'd practiced with his blade enough to know the magical potential was low. Not to self; kappa hair wasn't terribly useful for swords. He decided to keep his tone carefully even; she seemed experienced, but there was always the chance a little psychological warfare would help out. As he spoke, he slid his claws out of the natural sheath of bone.
"I suppose I'll go with five spellcards, nonspell for each. Be nice to have some exercise."
As he says this, the forge youkai draws the blade; it seems a normal blade, except the tip instead has a sharp, straight angle, like a hook, on it. If the blade was held level and pointed straight, the angle would point torwards the four o clock position. Other than that the blade was straight and well-kept.
It WAS such an excellent work though, in his opinion. The spellcards he'd came up with for it had even traumatized that one fairy. Right, then.
The eyeholes in his wings glowed red, creating a very slight heat haze. It was his form of flying; manipulation of the heat of the forge, concentrated of course. He didn't leave the ground, however. Better to see what Yukari did first.

"I shall use the same number, then. Ten patterns each- a nice even number, excellent for a fight like this," Yukari said, still grinning. With a flick of her wrist, a gap materialized for her to sit on, and she flew up above the ground, where the Hakurei shrine itself would be out of the line of fire. Even Yukari knew better than to risk damaging it without a very good reason.
"Let's keep dear Reimu's shrine out of this, and let the fun begin," she called. As soon as Mizuiro flew up and reached the same altitude, the battle would start- Yukari wasted no time, beginning by firing off swift circular waves of violet danmaku, each bullet shaped like a small violet dagger. The waves didn't overlap perfectly, and spaced out into almost a zig-zag pattern once they got further away from her. Her first non-spell was really just for the sake of warming up, she thought to herself as she waited for the inevitable return fire.

Little daggers... Somehow Mizuiro wasn't surprised. On the other hand he wasn't cold anymore, aloft in concentrated heat.
Well, anyway, her first was similar to his. It looked like it would be a good idea to keep distance; but not quite too much. So...
Nonspell: Fire Ring
With a simple snap of his metallic claws, Mizuiro spawns a circular ring of fire danmaku that spread out as expected, and then two more rings to either side so the last two would cross-slash the first one. A simple repeating pattern that speeds up during the last turn of duration.
Though he smiled, he didn't speak. Distractions could come later...

Yukari's nearly-effortless non-spell had the advantage of allowing her to move without breaking her concentration. As the rings of fire bullets approached, she rode on her gap to the sides, aiming to slip between the bullets before they reached her position. She kept up the waves of violet dagger bullets as she went, which threw the spreading zigzags into a slightly more chaotic jumble.

Mizuiro's spell required slightly more concentration than his opponent, it seemed. And of course chaos. Well, alright, two could play at chaos. Continuing to fire, he decided to go ahead and take this slowly, staying parallel to Yukari so as not to be caught in the crisscrossing patterns, most of the time. However, this also meant he had to pay attention to his sides as well. Shouldn't be too much of a problem; shaping her bullets like daggers had the very slight disadvantage of giving Mizuiro a very familiar image to avoid.

It seemed she hadn't managed to hit him. Really, though, if he hadn't been able to last a round of her first non-spell without getting hit, she would have been very disappointed. Without even a moment's hesitation, she continued her pattern, and gracefully drifted sideways to slip between the rings of bullets again, a bit faster this time. No sense in abandoning a working strategy. His non-spell was a similar style to hers, and the concentric rings lit the sky in violet and red. How lovely.

Wonderful, she was speeding up. A gambler, hm? Mizuiro had never been much for gambling. He found himself wondering why she mentioned the shrine, earlier; he considered taking a shot at it, but then if this supposed shrine maiden came back, he would rather be the least annoying thing in the area.
Stopping his parallel movement, he instead moved in the opposite direction a bit. Now he had more bullets to deal with, but from fewer directions. He stayed in that general spot, making small movements to avoid the little daggers, and continuing his spell steadily. Next turn it would speed up, so no need to take risks now.

A flaming bullet grazed past Yukari, almost hitting her- more accurately, she simply didn't feel the need to be any further from it. It wasn't as if it could spring back at her, it wasn't that type of danmaku. Her opponent had backed off a bit, putting him in the area of sparser, uneven zigzags rather than the denser rings- she'd seen that before. Worked well for some people.
This did mean she had to pay a bit more attention when she darted sideways, but it gave her a little more room as well. Yukari smiled. This was ever so fun.

Right, fun time. No risks, pay attention; let the spell do what it needs and don't worry about aiming. He felt the heat impulse go through his wings and charge the spell with a quick whoof of fire that quickly went out; and then the non-spell's speed increased about half again.
He didn't even bother to look at Yukari, and instead focused on her pattern. Sustaining this faster Fire Ring was the priority... And perhaps decided which of his forge spells to go with afterwards. Ah well, that was for later.
