Eirin Eirin wasn't excessively familiar with alchemy, but on second thought, yes, she did recall several of those elements being used in alchemy. "Your assumption is accurate. Though from the levels of concentration, one would think you'd been injected with toxic metals on a regular basis. It's safe to say that you have significantly less in common with humans on the functional level than I do," Eirin said, taking a moment to write her results down and put the vial of blood, which was slightly less full than the other, away.

"Hmm, interesting." Sumiko told her. Sumiko didn't care what the implications were about her in comparison to a baseline human. Heck, Eirin could have just outright declared her to be more like the typical yokai than a human, and she wouldn't be phased.
The truth was a bit less simple. It wasn't so much that she ended up being injected by mercury on a regular basis as it was that her liver never actually filtered it out, it not being poisonous to her and whatnot.

Eirin Eirin was glad she'd asked Sumiko to come by. The homunculus was turning out to be very interesting. "Hm. In humans, those metals tend to build up in their hair... I wonder if that will apply to you since obviously you aren't harmed by them? I'll require a bit of your hair. No more than a couple strands, but pulled out, not cut," the Lunarian said.

"I understand" Sumiko told her. She did find this a bit interesting. She was a bit less 'human' than she thought. Well, at least she didn't have to worry about yokai attacking her. She didn't know how poisonous that mercury was to yokai, but she figured that trying to eat her would make them ill.
Sumiko would wince a bit, but she wouldn't make a peep when Eirin extracted a few hair strands. There were trace amounts of it in her hair, though not as much as would be needed. The reason was simple; even though Sumiko wasn't poisoned by mercury, her body still was going to filter out enough to make sure that it didn't waste to much space in her body.

Eirin Yes, Sumiko would probably be toxic to most youkai. Obviously ones with body systems that could absorb and use metal, an affinity for poisons, or just completely alien internal structures wouldn't be affected, but animal youkai were very common and they would get quite sick from eating her, possibly die. The traces of mercury in her hair, which Eirin discovered with another analysis spell and which she quickly noted down, were not entirely unexpected. It was enough to suggest mercury's presence in her body, but not enough to suggest that her body was actively trying to force it out of her system. That made the amount present in her blood make more sense, if it simply wasn't leaving her system quickly at all. "You're quite a cooperative patient- I mean subject- oh, whatever. Most everyone else I examine, no matter what for, won't sit still for samples and won't answer my questions. Sometimes I get compulsive liars. They're fun," Eirin said, with heavy sarcasm on that last word.

"The alchemists mentioned that they hadn't been able to create a homunculus in a very long time, likely due to consensus. So naturally, I'm used to being examined in this fashion. I would imagine that others aren't quite so used to it" Sumiko told her.
"As for liars, I would presume that you find lie detection to be interesting." Sumiko told Eirin. At this point, it wouldn't exactly take a genius like Eirin to find out that Sumiko had no concept of sarcasm at all.

Eirin "That makes sense," Eirin said, as she started to go get more examination materials. However, she stopped short at Sumiko's second statement. "...No, that was not the case. That was a form of humor I picked up since coming to Earth known as sarcasm, where the specific tone of voice indicates out that the opposite of the statement is true. Compulsive liars give me a headache," she said, pausing to write this down. So she had no conception of sarcasm... hmm, now she was wondering about Sumiko's sense of humor in general, namely whether or not she had one. [Sorry for the delay. I just kinda derped, and Eirin's harder to write than any other character I've ever had.]

The concept of sarcasm didn't make any sense to Sumiko. After all, it seemed to her to effectively be 'I want to tell person xyz this, so I will say the opposite'. That being said, Eirin also paired it up with something else unfamiliar: humor.
"What is humor?" she asked. She'd heard the alchemists joke with each other, though she merely assumed that they had absorbed a few alchemical substances by mistake that had interfered with their thought processes.
[It's ok. I'm still waiting for Sumi's art to come in though.))

Eirin Well, that answered that question. Now she would have to explain humor, though. Ohhhh dear. She actually had to stop and think about that for a minute. Finally, she figured that this explanation would suffice. "Humor is anything specifically designed to elicit a reaction of amusement. In humans, Lunarians, most youkai I have encountered, and some gods, certain ways of saying things, such as phrases with two possible meanings, or surprising things that are harmless enough not to elicit fear, will cause a positive reaction that often includes laughter. This is both pleasant and quite useful for forming emotional bonds. Sarcasm, the form I mentioned earlier, generally only earns a minor amused reaction," she said. Really, Eirin loved a good joke. Though many of the jokes she found amusing were scientific in nature and would go over most people's heads, she could still appreciate less intellectual humor. It was necessary to, considering the rabbits she lived with.

Sumiko still didn't get the concept of amusement. In the end, trying to explain emotion to her was futile. All she personally had were as such were what she was taught to value. While these values weren't bad, they didn't tend to include emotional aspects.
Still, she was able to glean from Eirin's long winded explanation that people found it to be a worthwhile endeavor. Perhaps it bestowed some health benefits as well. Still, it did seem to be a sign that Eirin wished to be her friend. With what dregs of emotion she did possess, she did see that as a good thing.
"Understood. I accept." she told her.

Eirin Eirin let herself smile. Sumiko really was interesting. Even though she didn't seem to completely get it... yes, she definitely lacked emotional response. "It's worth learning to recognize humor if you plan to deal with others, I should tell you. If they try to joke with you and you do not respond, they may think you have something against them," Eirin added. She usually tried not to be too friendly with her patients or test subjects, but she could allow herself an exception. And Sumiko could probably use some tips if she was to be successful.

It would be most inconvenient if a misunderstanding caused someone to dislike her. She supposed she wouldn't be able to get the appeal of humor, but she could probably at least figure out how to recognize it.
"I see, I suppose that would be something worth avoiding." she told her "Thank you for your advice. I intend to act upon it." She figured that if she just told someone she didn't get humor after the first time they tried it, it'd work
